Sodium Benzoate Additive

The University of Sheffield claims that sodium benzoate (additive in some sodas, juices, pickles, ketchup, mustard and dressings) by itself can damage and in-activate vital parts of DNA in a cell’s mitochondria. Mitochondria consume oxygen to generate ATP which produces energy. We need oxygen to breathe and our cells need oxygen to function properly and to fight infection. It’s not good for anyone, but worse for those with asthma, copd, are overweight or have bladder issues.

In the presence of vitamin C and E, or an acidic environment, it forms Benzene, a strong carcinogen (causes cancer). Sodium benzoate is transported to the liver where it is filtered out and expelled in urine.

Certain mixtures of artificial food colors and sodium benzoate are associated with hyperactive behavior. Drinks with high levels of sodium benzoate (like soda) are reported to increase attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, according to an April 2014 study in the Journal of Attention Disorders.

It’s used to cut costs for producers who want to lengthen the shelf life of their products. It’s recommended by some to skip the sodas, juices and other products that list both sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid in the ingredients.
